Tattoo AFTERCARE Guide
Keep Your Ink Looking Its Best
Congratulations on your new tattoo!
The healing stage is where your artwork truly sets in, and with the right care, it’ll stay vibrant for years. This guide walks you through how to protect, clean, and moisturise your tattoo so it heals smoothly and safely.
Why Aftercare Matters
A fresh tattoo is a delicate wound. Proper care prevents infection, keeps colours crisp, and ensures the design settles beautifully into your skin. Whether you’ve got your first tattoo or your tenth, these steps make all the difference.

Step 1 — Keep It Covered
Your artist will wrap the tattoo
with either cling film or second skin
depending on your design, placement,
and skin type.

Leave it on for the time advised,
this first layer protects against
bacteria and friction.

Step 3 — Moisturise
Once dry, apply a thin layer
of tattoo specific aftercare lotion.

Less is more, over moisturising
can suffocate your skin and delay healing.
Stick to non petroleum formulas
designed for tattoos.

Step 2 — Wash It Gently
When you’re ready to remove the wrap:
• Wash your hands before touching the tattoo.
• Use lukewarm water and mild, fragrance free soap.
• Pat dry gently with a clean towel or let it air dry.
Avoid scrubbing, sponges,
or anything abrasive,
the goal is to be gentle.

Step 4 — Repeat Daily
For the next 3–4 weeks,
keep a consistent routine
of cleansing and light moisturising
twice a day.
You’ll notice peeling and mild itching,
which are normal signs of healing.
Healing Methods : Second Skin vs. Cling Film
We offer both methods at Avant Art Tattoo Studio.
Each has its benefits, here’s how to know which suits you best:
• Second Skin: A breathable, adhesive film that protects and locks in moisture. Ideal if you prefer a low maintenance option.
• Cling Film: A traditional wrap that you change and clean more often. Great if you have sensitive skin or prefer hands-on care.

What to Expect While Healing
• Redness & Tenderness: Normal for the first couple of days.
• Peeling or Flaking: Your skin is renewing — don’t pick at it!
• Itching: Means your skin is recovering. Use gentle moisturiser and resist scratching.
• Dull Appearance: The tattoo may look cloudy before the new skin layer fully settles.

Your Tattoo’s Long Term Care
After the first few weeks, continue moisturising daily and always use SPF when exposed to sunlight. UV rays are one of the biggest culprits of fading tattoos.
